Find a legal adviser help
This page provides help with using the directory of legal information and advice providers.
Search by:
You can use the directory in two ways:
- To find a provider close to you, enter your postcode. You don’t need to enter the full postcode or worry about spaces or capital letters. For example, you could enter LE1 3BT, le1 3bt, LE1 or le1
- Alternatively, if you know the name of the organisation you are looking for, enter its name into the box provided. If you are having trouble finding the organisation you want, try using fewer letters. For example, instead of searching for "White", try searching for "wh", which might bring up similar sounding names which are spelled differently (for example, "Whyte").
Areas of law
Tick the box of the area(s) of law that are relevant to your legal problem. See categories of law for a full description.
If you are not sure which category to choose, tick the ‘all categories’ box. This will return up to 50 providers in your chosen area.
Advanced search
Click on the ‘advanced search’ button if you have other needs such as wheelchair access or a legal aid provider.
Select level of help
This question asks you to choose the level of service you want:
- general help
- specialist help.
Providers are quality-marked at these levels by the Legal Services Commission. See Community Legal Service Quality Mark for a full explanation.
Do you need a legal aid provider?
Legal aid helps with the costs of legal advice for people who cannot afford it. For most cases, you must be financially eligible to receive legal aid (you can use our legal aid calculator to see whether you might be able to receive legal aid).
If you are eligible for legal aid and need a legal aid provider, tick this box.
Would you like an organisation that works with specific groups of people?
If you want to deal with an organisation experienced in working with a particular group (for example, lone parents or students), please select that group from the drop-down menu.
Accessibility options
Here you can specify if you want:
- to go to an office where someone speaks a language other than English
- to communicate using British sign language
- wheelchair access.
